Awards: Regional Line Officer - SoutheastEzra E. Nash Award
Ezra E. Nash was born in 1909. After working as a schoolteacher and principal, Ezra joined the Federal Probation System on August 1, 1939, serving as an officer in Birmingham, Alabama. He was devoted to the needs of those whom he supervised, and he was particularly concerned about the correctional needs of youthful offenders. He is known to have developed community service programs and halfway houses long before such concepts were even named. With the onset on WWII, Ezra served in the Army as a T/Sgt from 1943 to 1945 in the United States and the Southwest Pacific. With the establishment of the Federal Probation Officers Association in 1955, Ezra Nash immediately began work on the national level, serving on the Economics Committee from 1955 to 1958. Thereafter, from 1959 to 1964, he served on the Legislative Committee, followed by the Membership, Economics and Liaison Committees for two years each. In 1971 he was elected as the President of the Southeast Region and remained as such until 1974. Ezra retired from the Northern District of Alabama on December 31, 1975. Ezra worked with the Boy Scouts for 15 years in all positions through Commissioner. He was a member of the VFW, Alabama Sight Conservation, Mountain Brook School Board and Planning Commission, Alabama State Board of Veterans Affairs, Alabama Probation and Parole Association, Alabama Conference of Social Work and the Alabama Commission on Mental Health Planning. He passed away in 1992. Based upon his dedication, devotion and accomplishments throughout his career, the Southeast Regional Line Officer of the Year was re-named in his honor.
